This will change to a 22% Federal Tax Credit for the 2023 tax year and reduce each year.
The Biomass Thermal Energy Council (BTEC) has been working to implement the Biomass Thermal Utilization (BTU) act for more than a decade – and it’s finally been realized! On December 21, 2020, Congress signed into law a 26% federal tax credit starting in 2022 for wood stoves AND pellet stove purchases and installation complying with these BTU revisions! Meaning more accessibility to clean-burning and modern wood heat for you.

How much is this new tax credit?
In 2022, taxpayers can claim 26 percent of purchase AND installation costs, with no limit. In 2023, that amount drops to 22 percent. But this is MUCH more generous than the old tax credit, which was just $300 and had many limitations.

Will this tax credit be available for 2023?
Yes a tax credit for 2023 will be available but the % you can save will drop from 26% to 22% for tax year 2023 for qualifying stoves using wood and pellet fuel.
What makes a stove eligible for a tax credit?
Any wood or pellet-fueled heater (heats air or water) that is at least 75 percent efficient per the higher heating value (HHV) of the fuel and must be purchased and installed in 2021 or 2022 tax year.
This is a different requirement when compared to the old tax credit. Consult the EPA certified list of heaters to see which products qualify.

If I buy a stove this year will I still qualify?
Yes 2023 has a tax credit of 22% of your cost for the stove package or system as long as it is a EPA qualified wood or pellet stove, if you purchased a stove in 2022 you can apply for the tax credit of 26% savings on the total cost of your system.
What is the code section for the tax credit?
The Wood and Pellet Heater Investment Tax Credit (ITC), officially came into effect on January 1, 2021. The new credit – under Internal Revenue Code Section 25(D) – was created by spending legislation enacted by Congress at the end of 2020.
